Common Questions

What is the time commitment?

Volunteers can teach either Thursdays or Fridays from 1-3 pm. Students generally leave the 5Cs around 12:30-12:45 pm to arrive on time to their assigned schools.

When do we get access to the week's lesson plan?

Our lesson writers want to provide our volunteers with clear and concise instructions, so lessons are given out 1-2 days before volunteer date (Wednesdays).

How do we get to the schools?

On our interest form we ask if students have a car and are willing to drive their group to their assigned school. If there are not enough student drivers, Science Bus will pay for a Lyft or Uber to get you there.

How do we know which group we are assigned to?

Although we do like to have a consistent number of volunteers each week, we understand that COVID and school can get in the way. Please let us know sooner than later if you are unable to volunteer on a given week. We send out group assignments along with the lesson plan for the week. You will likely continue teaching at the same school with the same group during the semester, but at times this will vary. There will be 5-6 people per group that splits into pairs for teaching. If you are new you will not have to teach on your own unless you're comfortable.

What is the classroom setting like?

Some schools teach outside and some inside. Not all students and teachers wear masks, but masking up or not is up to you. Class sizes vary. At some schools you will be teaching special needs classes which are much smaller than other classes, and you may not get through the entire lesson plan or have the class cut short.

How do I apply to a leadership position?

Our leadership application is sent out in an email at the end of each semester. All open positions will be listed along with their position description.

Are there any requirements to join?

The only requirement is that you be a 5C student.

What are the benefits of joining?

Science Bus is a great way to give back to the local community and gain experience teaching. Additionally, after every session Science Bus pays to get your group Boba, allowing you time to bond and build connections with people across the 5Cs.
